The Sonder Collection
A MULTIMEDIA CONVERSATION WITH OUR COMMUNITY
Everybody has a story. They are stories of individuals and families living on the margins. They are stories of struggle and chance and bad luck and tough choices, but they are also the stories of hope and partnership and risk and strength. They are stories from which we all have something to learn. That’s why we’re setting out to tell these stories and to ignite a conversation with our community about action and opportunity. By capturing individual stories through powerful portraiture and testimonial we will start a conversation about stigma, stereotype, and disparity in our community.
A DOCUMENTARY SHORT ABOUT DIVERSITY AND DISPARITY IN ONE SMALL TOWN
Boulder County Colorado has a reputation for being one of the healthiest, most active, educated, and wealthy communities in America. But this is only half the story. There are families struggling with poverty, teenagers who are victims of bullying, and immigrants who are harassed and discriminated against. Better tells that story through the voices of the individuals living on the margins of society. Within their stories arises an opportunity for Boulder County to embrace its diversity and to be better - for all of us. Better was produced in partnership with Boulder County Community Services. It was the product of a year long collaboration with nonprofit agencies and more than 50 individuals who graciously shared their stories of living on the margins.
Produced in partnership with
Boulder County DEPARTMENT OF Community Services
We work in partnership with local nonprofit organizations to identify marginalized populations and recruit participants. Together we interviewed individuals from transgender, homeless, working poor, food insecure, and refugee communities to share their stories.
By capturing stories through stunning portraiture and powerful testimonial, we built a powerful exhibit that rotated through venues across the County. The stories challenged stereotypes and addressed misconceptions about the most marginalized residents of Boulder, CO.
The project culminated with a community-wide dissemination effort. Combining mediums and dissemination channels we worked with partners to identify public and private spaces to share the stories in thought-provoking way
